Direct drive vs belt drive for beginners

Verdict

These two cost within $50 of each other and are not the same purchase. One is a complete belt-drive set with a wheel and pedals in the box. The other is a bare direct drive base that needs both. The real question is not which technology feels better, it is which of those two things is the better use of roughly $450, and for most first buyers the answer is decided by which console you own rather than by the force feedback.

What you are actually choosing between

The table above is not comparing like with like, and that is the honest shape of this decision at this budget.

$449.99 buys a T300 RS GT: a base, a detachable rim and a three-pedal set. You open the box and you can drive.

$399.99 buys a CSL DD: a base. No rim, no pedals. To reach the same working state you add both, and you are no longer in the same budget conversation.

Anyone presenting this as "direct drive is only $50 more" is comparing a complete product to a component. The interesting question is whether a bare direct drive base is a better use of roughly $450 than a finished belt-drive setup, and reasonable people land differently on it.

The torque figure that does not exist

Before the feel argument, a fact that reframes it.

Thrustmaster publishes no force feedback torque figure for the T300 RS GT. Their specification page gives 25 W of power, a brushless servomotor, a dual belt system and 16-bit resolution. There is no newton-metre number on it.

If you have read that this base makes 3.9 Nm, that number did not come from Thrustmaster. It is a community estimate that has been reprinted often enough to look like a specification. We found this while correcting our own catalogue, which had recorded a frankly impossible 280 Nm for the same base.

The absence is the interesting part. Direct drive manufacturers lead with torque because torque flatters direct drive: Fanatec puts 5 Nm, and 8 Nm with the Boost Kit, on the front of the CSL DD page. The belt-drive incumbent declines to print the number at all. Read that as a signal about where belt drive sits in 2026 rather than as a defect in this specific base.

It also means any table claiming to compare these two on torque is comparing a published figure to a guess.

Why entry direct drive anyway

Here is the position this site holds, stated as opinion because that is what it is.

Entry direct drive is the right starting point, and not because belt wheels are unusable. It is because a mid-torque direct drive base lets you test every driving style before you know which one is yours, and it is the tier where you stop outgrowing hardware in six months. If you are shopping at $300 to $400, stretching to around $500 is usually the right call. That range boundary is where regret lives: close enough to stretch, far enough that settling means upgrading within a year.

I learned on a hand-me-down wheel with no working force feedback, and I spun out constantly. What that taught me was not that cheap wheels are bad. It was that feedback is not a luxury feature layered on top of steering. It is the information you steer with. Without it you are guessing where the grip went, and you find out you were wrong when the car is already sideways.

That is the argument for direct drive at entry level in one sentence: it is not about strength, it is about resolution of information. A belt set gives you real information. A direct drive base gives you more of it, sooner, and keeps giving it as you get faster.

The platform split decides more than the feel

For most readers, everything above is downstream of one question.

The CSL DD is PC and Xbox. Fanatec's page explicitly rules out PlayStation, and no rim or adapter changes that. The T300 RS GT is PC and PlayStation.

So these two products barely compete. If you own a PS5, the CSL DD is not an option at any price and the comparison is over. If you own an Xbox, the T300 is not an option. Only PC owners get to make the decision this article is nominally about.

That is worth stating loudly because the roundups lead with feel and torque, and the platform line is the one that actually eliminates a product from your list. On Xbox there is a further wrinkle: the licence lives in the wheel rather than the base, so a CSL DD needs a licensed rim to reach the console at all.

What the belt set gets right

Not a consolation paragraph. Two real advantages.

It is finished. Wheel, pedals and base arrive together, matched, with no second purchase and no compatibility question to resolve. For a first rig that is worth more than a spec sheet suggests, and this site's stated purpose is reducing the anxiety of not knowing whether everything bolts together.

And the rim detaches. The T300's rim uses Thrustmaster's quick wheel changing system, so a different Thrustmaster rim can go on later. That is a genuine upgrade path, not a dead end, which separates it from the fixed-rim sets below it.

The footnote that dates every review

One last thing about reading specifications at all.

Fanatec raised the ClubSport DD's holding torque from 12 Nm to 15 Nm in firmware V1.4.2.3 in May 2026. Same hardware, more torque, by software. Every review written before that date understates a base that is physically identical to the one shipping now.

We record specifications with the date we checked them for exactly this reason. A number without a date is not a fact about the hardware. It is a fact about when someone looked.
